Why are we afraid of the dark? How come the pitch blackness is so intimidating? There are a number of reasons, and I have not met a soul alive who, at one point in their lives, wasn’t afraid of the dark. Remember when we were children, and we would have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night? But we just could not muster the courage to go, and when we eventually did, we did a number of things such as think about something that made us happy intensely as we fast walked to the bathroom, or we just woke up our parents to have them walk us there. Experiencing the dark as a child is equivalent to feeling like you are not in control for the first time. And that is really what makes us scared of the dark, all the lights off, the pitch blackness, not being able to see in front of or around you, it really boils down to feeling like for once, you are not in control of your body or your feelings. Your mind wanders fiercely as you immediately think about the most recent thing that terrified you in your life, maybe a movie, a person, or an event. And somehow, that fear was in control, lurking in the dark even if it pretty much wasn’t. We were still convinced it was there, about to grab and harm us. We are afraid of the dark because it houses all the things we are afraid of. Just because you cannot see something, doesn’t mean it’s not there.
